PDF vs Word vs Markdown: Which Export Format Should You Use?

July 2026 · 5 min read

Save AI can export the same conversation as a PDF, a Word document, Markdown, JSON or a long screenshot. They are not interchangeable — each is best for a different job. Here is how to choose.

PDF — for sharing and archiving

PDF gives you a fixed, faithful record that looks the same everywhere and is easy to attach, print or file. Pick it when the conversation is finished and you mainly want to keep or send it.

Word — for editing

A real .docx turns the chat into an editable document with proper headings, lists and code blocks. Pick it when you will rewrite, annotate or fold the content into a larger report.

Markdown & JSON — for tools and data

Markdown pastes cleanly into Obsidian, Notion and static sites and stays fully searchable. JSON is structured by role and message, ready for scripts, datasets or RAG pipelines. Pick these when the chat is an input to something else.

Still unsure? Use PDF to keep it, Word to edit it, Markdown to reuse it, JSON to process it, and a long screenshot to post it. Save AI does all five from the same one-click menu.
